For a couple of years now, I've tried my hand at developing a spreadsheet to try to predict the NHL playoffs. The combined results for the previous years have been:
- 2010: 10/15 series correct
- 2012: 9/15
- 2013: 12/15
- Combined: 31/45 series correct
While not claiming that this model is necessarily any better than other particular prediction systems, it is almost definitely better than chance. The chance of correctly guessing 31/45 50:50 series (or better) is actually only 0.8%, so I'm confident in saying it does better than blindly guessing.
Below are some graphs of the probabilities for teams to win the playoffs, which I'll update every day as new information rolls in. Wish me luck!
